Security & Software Quality

Secure development practices, authentication done properly, and automated testing that catches regressions before your users do.

The problem

The common breaches are not sophisticated

In the applications we review, the recurring findings are mundane: an authorisation check applied in the interface but not the API, a dependency three years out of date, secrets committed to a repository, and an admin endpoint that was never meant to be reachable from the internet.

Quality problems follow the same shape. Without automated tests, teams rely on manual checks that shrink under deadline pressure, and the regressions that reach production are usually in code nobody intended to touch.

Our approach

Fix the categories, not only the instances

We review the application for the classes of weakness that cause real incidents - broken access control, injection, insecure direct object references, exposed secrets, vulnerable dependencies, and misconfigured infrastructure - and report findings with reproduction steps, severity, and a concrete fix.

Authorisation gets particular attention, because it is both the most commonly broken control and the one least caught by scanners. We check it at the data-access layer, where it cannot be bypassed by calling a different endpoint.

Then we make the fix durable: dependency scanning and secret detection in the pipeline, authentication built on a maintained provider rather than hand-rolled cryptography, and a test suite weighted toward permission boundaries and the paths where failure is expensive.

Capabilities

What this service covers

Individual capabilities are scoped per engagement - this is the range we work across, not a list every project includes.
  • Application security reviews
  • Secure development practices and developer guidance
  • Authentication and authorisation implementation
  • API security assessments
  • Automated testing and quality assurance
  • Performance and load testing
  • Dependency and supply-chain hygiene
  • Reliability and maintainability improvements

Deliverables

What you actually receive

Illustrative artifacts from a typical engagement. The exact set is agreed during discovery and written into the statement of work.
  1. 01

    Security review report

Findings with reproduction steps, severity, business impact, and a specific remediation for each.

  2. 02

    Authorisation model

A documented permission model enforced at the data-access layer, with tests proving each boundary holds.

  3. 03

    Pipeline safeguards

Dependency scanning, secret detection, and static analysis running on every pull request.

  4. 04

    Automated test suite

Unit, integration, and end-to-end coverage concentrated on business rules and permission boundaries.

  5. 05

    Developer guidance

Short, practical standards for the patterns that caused the findings, so the same class of issue does not return.

Engagement

How a project in this area runs

Tailored to this service rather than a generic four-box process diagram.
  1. 01

    Scope and threat model

What the application protects, who might want it, and which parts of the surface deserve the most attention.

  2. 02

    Review

Code review, authorisation testing, dependency and configuration analysis against a structured checklist.

  3. 03

    Report and prioritize

Findings ranked by real business impact, with a remediation plan and the sequence we would fix them in.

  4. 04

    Remediate and automate

Fixes implemented or supported, plus pipeline checks and tests that prevent recurrence.

Questions

What clients ask about Security & Software Quality

Is this a penetration test?

No, and the distinction matters. We perform application security reviews and authorisation testing as an engineering discipline. A formal penetration test or certified compliance audit should come from an accredited specialist firm, and we are happy to work alongside one and remediate its findings.

Can you get us SOC 2 or HIPAA compliant?

We can implement and document many of the technical controls those frameworks expect, and we work to your compliance team's requirements. We are not an auditor and do not issue certifications - attestation has to come from a qualified third party. Anyone claiming otherwise is overselling.

How much test coverage do we need?

Coverage percentage is a weak target. We weight tests toward business rules, permission boundaries, integration seams, and the paths where failure is expensive - and leave thin coverage on code where a bug is cheap and obvious. A well-aimed suite at sixty percent beats an evenly spread one at ninety.

Should we build our own authentication?

Almost never. Password hashing, session management, multi-factor enrollment, and account recovery are each easy to get subtly wrong, and the failure mode is severe. A maintained provider or well-audited library is the right default for nearly every project.
