E-commerce & Retail
Context
What the work looks like here
Retail technology has two halves that are usually managed separately: the storefront customers see, and the operational systems that decide whether what they ordered can actually ship. Problems in the second half surface as problems in the first.
On the storefront, performance is not an abstraction. Mobile shoppers on mid-range devices and inconsistent networks abandon slow pages, and the cost of a heavy third-party script is measured in orders.
Constraints that shape the build
These are engineering decisions we make by default in this sector, before anyone asks for them.
- Performance budget enforced in the deployment pipeline
- Inventory treated as eventually consistent, with explicit reconciliation
- Accessible checkout - a legal exposure as well as a revenue one
- Payment data handled by the provider; we do not store card details
Problems we solve
Where technology makes a measurable difference
Slow pages on mobile networks
Performance engineering on real throttled devices - image strategy, script auditing, and server rendering - rather than tuning for a synthetic score.
Checkout abandonment from friction
Checkout analysis and redesign: fewer required fields, clearer error recovery, saved progress, and honest shipping information shown early.
Inventory that disagrees with reality
Integration between storefront, warehouse, and supplier systems with reconciliation, so oversells become rare and visible rather than frequent and silent.
Merchandising that needs a developer
Content models and admin tooling that let merchandisers build campaigns and landing pages without a deployment.
Typical work
What we are usually asked to build
- Headless and custom storefront development
- Core Web Vitals and performance remediation
- Checkout and conversion optimization
- Inventory, pricing, and fulfillment integration
- Campaign landing pages and merchandising tools
- Customer service and operations consoles
