Premium E-commerce Experience

A storefront engineered for mid-range phones on imperfect networks, where the product is the only thing competing for attention.

The problem

What this kind of product has to solve

Premium retail sites routinely undermine themselves with their own presentation. Full-screen video, animation libraries, and a dozen marketing scripts push first paint past four seconds on the mid-range Android phones a large share of customers actually use.

Checkout then adds avoidable friction: required fields nobody has to hand, shipping costs revealed at the last step, and validation errors that clear the form.

The solution concept

How we built it

This concept build treats performance as an art-direction constraint rather than a cleanup task. The catalog and product pages are server-rendered with almost no client JavaScript; interactivity is added per component, so browsing a category never costs a framework hydration.

Imagery is the one place weight is spent deliberately - modern formats, correct dimensions per breakpoint, explicit aspect ratios to prevent layout shift, and eager loading reserved strictly for the single above-the-fold hero asset.

Checkout asks for the minimum at each step, shows shipping cost before the final screen, preserves every entered value when validation fails, and works fully by keyboard. A performance budget is enforced in the deployment pipeline, so a future script addition fails review rather than quietly eroding the experience.

Engineering decisions

The choices that actually determine whether it works

Each of these could have gone the other way. The reasoning is the part worth reading - it is how we would argue the same case on your project.
  1. 01

Server-rendered by default, interactive by exception

Islands of interactivity instead of whole-page hydration. Most pages ship a few kilobytes of JavaScript rather than a few hundred.

  2. 02

One eager image per page, no exceptions

The hero asset is prioritized and everything below the fold is lazy. Competing eager images are the most common cause of a poor LCP.

  3. 03

Checkout preserves state through every failure

Validation errors never clear fields, and progress survives a refresh. Losing a filled form is the most expensive avoidable abandonment.

  4. 04

    Performance budget enforced in CI

Bundle size and Core Web Vitals thresholds are checked on every pull request, so the site does not degrade a kilobyte at a time.

Intended business value

What this is designed to achieve

  • Intended to remove the self-inflicted performance barriers that cap conversion on mobile, where a large share of retail traffic arrives.
  • Designed so that accessibility and keyboard operation extend through checkout - a legal exposure as well as a commercial one.
  • Built with an enforced budget so the experience holds up after a year of marketing additions, not only on launch day.

No outcome figures are shown because this is a concept build with no client deployment behind it. Quoting a percentage here would be fabrication, so we quote nothing.

Built with

  • Next.js
  • TypeScript

  • AVIF and WebP
  • Edge caching

Interface rendered from styled markup rather than a screenshot - crisp at any density, and no image request. Values shown are illustrative.
